How about a green tea latte for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up, or an iced latte for an energizing summer breakfast?

The traditional latte is a simple recipe made with espresso and steamed milk. We can enjoy this delicious drink in its traditional form or one of its many variations – such as regular, almond, soy, or non-fat milk, hot or cold, or with green tea instead of espresso.

The green tea used in a latte is called matcha. Matcha is low in calories and sodium. In addition to protein and vitamins, matcha contains fiber and has higher levels of antioxidants than brewed tea.

The calories in a green tea latte mainly come from the milk and the sweetener. If you use non-fat milk and little to no sweetener, then you can have a non-fat latte very low in calories.

Traditional green tea is not served sweet. But if you do like it on the sweeter side, honey is the healthiest choice since it is a non-processed, natural sugar.

I recommend these healthy recipes.

Hot Latte Recipe

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons matcha green tea powder

1/4 cup hot water

3/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon honey

Steps:

  1. Spoon matcha powder into a cup.
  2. Pour hot water (but not boiling) into the cup. Use a whisk to mix the matcha powder and hot water to make a paste.
  3. Heat milk. Remove from heat when milk begins to boil. Pour the steamed milk (but not boiling) into a cup.
  4. Add the melted matcha to the milk.
  5. Add honey, if desired. Stir.
  6. Top with foamy milk.
  7. Serve hot.

Note: Be careful not to use boiling water. Green tea becomes bitter when it is overheated.

Iced Latte Recipe

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons matcha green tea powder

1/4 cup hot water

1 cup of ice

3/4 cup milk

1 teaspoon honey

Steps:

  1. Spoon matcha powder into a shaker.
  2. Pour hot water (but not boiling) into the shaker. Use a whisk to mix the matcha powder and hot water to make a paste.
  3. Add the ice cubes to the shaker.
  4. Add the milk.
  5. Add honey, if desired.
  6. Place the lid on top of the shaker and shake well.
  7. Strain the contents into a tall glass pre-filled with fresh ice.
  8. Serve cold.

Variation:

Instead of using a shaker, blend all the contents together in a blender. Blend until smooth.
